CHOICE Review

The field of linguistics dictionaries is very crowded: of the dozens published in the last 20 years, many are still in print. Thus this latest entry faces stiff competition, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Of course it cannot be compared in comprehensiveness with Encyclopedia of Language and Linguistics, ed. by R.E. Asher (10v., CH, Jun '94), but it naturally invites comparison with David Crystal's Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics (3rd ed., 1991), his Encyclopedia Dictionary of Language and Languages (CH, Sep'93), and The Linguistics Encyclopedia, ed. by Kirsten Malmkjaer and James M. Anderson (CH, Sep'92). Although these and similar dictionaries vary markedly in comprehensiveness and scope, it is difficult to credit Bussmann's claim that "the present dictionary differs fundamentally from these monumental works. In its scope and format, it fills a gap which . . . has existed up until now." That said, it must be conceded that this is one of the best one-volume linguistics dictionaries available. A revised and expanded English translation of the author's Lexikon der Sprachwissenschaft (2nd ed., Stuttgart, 1990), it features concise, scholarly definitions, thorough bibliographical references, helpful diagrams and illustrations, and an admirably broad scope.
