School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 2 Brown follows Flossie through a typical cat day. Flossie has a full lifechildren meet her neighbors, learn her hobbies, see her favorite haunts around the house. With authorial tongue firmly in cheek, Brown tells youngsters that Flossie is ``an enthusiastic gardener,'' as she is pictured digging up a bed of nasturtiums. Brown is, quite obviously, gone on cats, and anyone who shares her feeling will be quite gone on Flossie. Those philistines who do not know that cats are people, too, may call this book precious, but pay them (and their dogs) no mind. The paintings, softly colored portraits of Flossie, are charming. The page design is pleasingly effective, and the quality of the color reproduction is startingly rich. A book that is simplefulfillingly so. Ages 4-6. This is certainly a book for children who have cats around the house and for other cat lovers as well. Brown's portraits of long-haired Flossie in and out of doors have plenty of humor as they illustrate the deadpan narrative that cites her many activities. Flossie's bird-watching is demonstrated by her intent eyeballing of the household parakeet; skillful climbing means negotiating a raised ladder; and helping with knitting involves tangling herself up with relish in a ball of red yarn. Other classic sights include Flossie peering out from a burrow under bedcovers, staring out over the top of a cardboard box, or trying to fit into a shoe box. Brown's pictures are amusing and affectionate: no doubt she relied on a real Flossie for inspiration for the behavioral nuances reflected in the scenes have an unmistakable vrit. DMW. Cats Fiction [OCLC]Kirkus Book Review
Flossie is a real charmer in this series of paintings capturing the essence of cats. Not much happens; we are shown all her favorite pursuits--bird-watching, helping with the knitting, sitting in boxes--or doing some things she doesn't like as well--going to the vet or hiding from the sound of fireworks. Most of all, Flossie loves sleeping, and we are given several views of this activity. Flossie is a fluffly brown tabby with white on her face, and especially in a view of her sleeping, a great white expanse of tummy. Only one of the pictures shows Flossie from a distance with houses and people in view. Most are close-ups with delicate detail and marvelous patterning of the textiles or vegetation around her. Colors are lush and Flossie is very pattable. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission. There are no comments on this title.
