' I always thought you'd know, somehow, if something terrible was going to happen. I thought you'd sense it, like when the air goes damp and heavy before a storm and you know you'd better hide yourself away somewhere safe until it all blows over. But it turns out it's not like that at all. There's no scary music playing in the background like in films. No warning signs. Not even a lonely magpie. One for sorrow, Mum used to say. Quick, look for another.'

School Library Journal Review
Gr 9 Up-Set in London, this first novel by Furniss follows 15-year-old Pearl throughout the year following her mother's death. Pearl's mother has died giving birth to her stepsister, and Pearl blames the baby (who looked just like a rat when she was born) for her mother's death. Pearl is a realistic teenager: self-absorbed, sarcastic, and expert at pushing everyone away. Initially she retreats from her stepfather and best friend and wallows in her grief; she remains isolated except for random times her mother "appears" to talk to her. Gradually, though, Pearl begins to work through her feelings. The result is a touching, sometimes humorous book that will stick with readers. Billie Fulford-Brown beautifully expresses Pearl's roller-coaster emotions and angst. Pearl's father and grandmother are done with a heavier Scottish brogue which can be a bit difficult to understand at times. VERDICT Buy this for those listeners who have enjoyed works dealing with loss such as Sonya Sones's One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies or Adele Griffin's Where I Want to Be.-Julie Paladino, East Chapel Hill High School, NC (c) Copyright 2015. Fifteen-year-old Pearl learns how quickly life can change when her mother dies giving birth to her half sister, Rose. Pearl's loss consumes her to the point of avoiding her best friend, arguing with her loving stepdad, and harboring a decided distaste for Rose, whom she secretly calls The Rat. Pearl completes her exams under duress and barely cares about going back to school. But there are things she doesn't know, and although her mother appears and speaks with her often, some of the pieces don't fall into place. When Pearl leaves home and ends up on her never-met-before birth father's doorstep, hard truths tumble all around her. Pearl's emptiness over the loss of her mother, her inability to see Rose as anything but a reminder of that loss, and the rifts that threaten to tear best friends apart are realistically explored in this debut novel. Grief and the struggle to come to grips with it are a centerpiece that requires a box of tissues and the willingness to embrace another's pain.--Fredriksen, Jeanne Copyright 2015 BooklistThere are no comments on this title.
