CHOICE Review
Morrison and Conaway are coauthors of five books on intercultural communication, including (with Joseph J. Douress), Dun & Bradstreet's Guide to Doing Business around the World (CH, Dec'97, 35-1913). Their new volume describes business cultures in more than 60 countries. To collect information for each country, they contacted embassies, representatives from the private and public sectors, and universities. Each chapter focuses on a single country and includes country background (history, government, language); natural and human hazards; business practices (e.g., punctuality, appointments, negotiations, entertaining); protocol (e.g., greetings, gestures, gifts, dress); multiple-choice trivia questions; and cultural orientation. For example, in the China chapter, the cultural orientation section states that the Chinese learn through experience, truth is subjective, individuals are held responsible for decisions made in a collectivist system, and there is a strong commitment to the extended family. Various cultural notes are scattered throughout the chapters. Appendixes contain a discussion of formal titles and forms of address, a few Internet travel resources, a summary of holidays, and lists of international electrical adaptors. An expanded Web version of this volume, available by site license, contains business and cultural data on more than 100 countries . ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
