School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 2-In BiddyBid, Milly and Molly visit a woman in the country. In Grandpa Friday, the girls try to cheer up an elderly man. And in Pet Day, they take their cats to school for a pet show. In all three books, each page has a large, colorful illustration surrounded by ample white space and just a few lines of large type. The simple, slice-of-life stories have very little detail or clarity. Readers are never told what the relationship is between BiddyBid, Grandpa Friday, and the girls. In addition, each book claims to promote a value, but the messages are muddied. For example, in the book about forgiveness, BiddyBid asks the girls to forgive her when she takes a nap, though this is only one small part of a random story about plums and measles. The values in the other two books are compassion and loyalty, respectively, but they are not successfully integrated into the plots. For books that truly explain values to children without the confusion of a muddled story line, try the "Character Education" series (Bridgestone).-Heather E.
