CHOICE Review

A generally good source guide with a decidedly British slant. Coverage is international and provides information, especially addresses, not always easy to find. However, where short lists on specific topics are included (statistical sources, standards, institutes, libraries, etc.), the emphasis is on British names and addresses. Subjects covered are wide-ranging, with the first half of the book covering specific critical metals as well as extraction metallurgy. The second half deals with "applications": powder metallurgy; ceramics; corrosion; design; welding; and metals in the packaging, aerospace, and construction industries. The index is adequate. Unfortunately, no chapter outlines are included, forcing the user to page through entire chapters to find a particular subsection. Not all chapters include bibliographies, but generous inclusion of sources within chapter texts compensates for this lack. Research and graduate-level libraries supporting strong programs in metals and materials will want to purchase this guide. -V. E. Dow, Tredyffrin Public Library
