CHOICE Review
Current and future medievalists and Chaucer scholars will welcome this unique, comprehensive bibliography. Part of the "Chaucer Bibliographies" series, which aims to become the "definitive companion to the study of Chaucer," this work is seventh of a projected 18 volumes. Sutton (medieval literature, California State Univ., Dominguez Hills), provides an "exhaustive" study of works about these portions of The Canterbury Tales, 1900-95; seminal works from the end of the 19th century are included. Items consist of articles, books, book chapters, and some dissertations in many languages. The author does not use evaluative terms in describing citations, but the number and length of entries for a particular work may often indicate its importance. The 1,200 entries average a third to half a page in length and include cross-references. While it is useful to have relevant scholarship gathered in one volume, the work's real value lies in its efforts to clarify and connect the existing literature. No other Chaucer bibliography compares to this series; earlier bibliographies cover briefer time periods or intend to be introductory. This particular volume represents the only work devoted to The Pardoner's Prologue and Tale. Essential for libraries supporting upper-division Chaucer research. K.
