One must admire this chronological, enumerative, often generously annotated bibliography of English translations of 20th-century Italian belles lettres (including opera libretti). Building on his predecessors--especially Nancy Shields's Italian Translations in America (1931), Joseph G. Fucilla's section in volume 3 of The Literatures of the World in English Translation (1970), and Ray Keenoy and Fiorenza Conte's The Babel Guide to Italian Fiction (in English Translation) (1995)--Healey thoroughly covers the field, whose parameters he scrupulously sets forth in his introduction. Entries are arranged by the year of the translation's first publication, then alphabetically by main entry. For important items, Healey includes brief biographical information and critical extracts. Sources and locations are also indicated. The compiler (a selector, Univ. of Toronto Library) solicits addenda; no omissions were noted. Includes indexes of authors, titles, translators, publishers, and periodicals.
