CHOICE Review
After ten years of exhaustive research in the rich communal archives in Arezzo province (Bucine, Cavriglia, Civitella, Montevarchi, and Florence) and extensive interviews, Belco (Portland State Univ.) vividly reconstructs that transitional phase from the fall of fascism in 1943 to the new Italian constitution in 1948. Thirteen engaging chapters question what kept communal society together through German occupation, with village burnings and brutal massacres followed by the Allied Control Commission and permeated by shared suffering from war, a sense of victimhood, and images of a martyred Italy. Through graphic witness accounts, Belco illustrates the problems of collective and divisive memories as people returned to civil society and rebuilt communal identity without a governmental structure, resorting to self-reliance for food and shelter and self-determination in seeking jobs and facing reprisals and influxes of refugees. Centuries-old institutions, such as sharecropping (mezzadria), faced contractual reform but became social anachronisms. Amid the competing political climates of Catholicism and communism, Belco highlights the importance of elections and the positive role of women in emerging political parties. A tour de force enhancing knowledge of postwar Italian reconstruction. Summing Up: Recommended. All university and research libraries. M. S.
