School Library Journal Review
K-Gr 2-This introductory title will provide answers to some of the questions children have about the animal world. Each two-page spread is devoted to a specific topic, most of which have to do with the various ways creatures can be described or categorized. Thus, there are sections on types of animals, animals sharing the same habitats, and behaviors. Many examples are accompanied by a full-color photo or drawing, and a few observation-related projects are included. Overall, however, the information is very basic and somewhat generalized. There is a lot to look at on each page, but there is a good balance of text, pictures, and white space. While the language is too difficult for newly independent readers, this would be a wonderful read-aloud for an adult and child to share and perhaps even use as a springboard for further investigation. An attractive offering.-Arwen Marshall, formerly at New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. This broad overview of the animal kingdom distinguishes animals from other living things and discusses movement, senses, diet, hunting techniques, defenses, and social behavior. Other sections focus on animal classes, different habitats, and endangerment. Brief paragraphs and explanatory captions are accompanied by illustrations and photos, giving the book a choppy feel.
