Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Written for students of linguistics, applied linguistics and speech therapy, this dictionary covers over 2,000 terms in phonetics and phonology. In addition to providing a comprehensive, yet concise, guide to an enormous number of individual terms, it also includes an explanation of the most important theoretical approaches to phonology. Its usefulness as a reference tool is further enhanced by the inclusion of pronunciations, notational devices and symbols, earliest sources of terms, suggestions for further reading, and advice with regard to usage. The wide range of topics explained include:* Classical phonology, including American Structuralism and the Prague School* Contemporary approaches, including Autosegmental Phonology, Metrical Phonology, Dependency Phonology, Government Phonology and Lexical Phonology* Prosodic ideas in phonology, both traditional and contemporary ^ * * historical phonology* Intonation and tonologyThis dictionary devotes space to the various theoretical approaches in proportion to their importance, but it concentrates most heavily on non-theory-bound descriptive terminology. It will remain a definitive reference for years to come.

CHOICE Review

More than 2,000 terms in phonetics and phonology are covered in this comprehensive and up-to-date dictionary. Intended chiefly for students and teachers of phonetics and linguistics, it features coverage of standard, well-established terms as well as terms from more recent developments, such as "Autosegmental Phonology" and "Metrical Phonology." The phonology of English is thoroughly treated, but terms applicable to other languages "are included if they feature prominently in the literature." The author is careful to distinguish between predominant senses of a term and senses less frequently encountered. In addition to defining individual terms concisely, the dictionary provides more lengthy explanations of the various theoretical schools, such as the Prague school and American structuralism. The definitions are admirably clear and feature the frequent use of helpful illustrative examples. Every term includes its pronunciation in International Phonetic Alphabet notation, and many terms include suggestions for further reading. There is an ample bibliography. Although other dictionaries of phonetics exist, this work is unique in its combination of phonetics and phonology in one thoroughly executed reference source. J. R. Luttrell Princeton University
