School Library Journal Review
ea. vol: photogs. by Chris Fairclough. 32p. charts. maps. glossary. index. (My Heritage Series). Watts. Sept. 1985. PLB $9.40. Gr 3-6 Rather than presenting the ``facts'' about religions, these volumes give a sense of how a religion affects the life of a single family. In each case an author and photographer show a 10- or 11-year-old child participating in festivals, worship and daily activities affected by religious beliefs. In this way, everyday aspects such as diet and dress relate to the holy days which are sometimes stressed in introductions to different religions. The color photographs further personalize the subject matter. The books contain brief first-person narrations by a child, printed in boldface type, followed by a third-person explanation by the author. The volumes contain brief descriptions of religious history and sacred writings. A calendar of major holidays, a glossary, index and set of statistics appear at the end of each volume. Although the families studied live in England, the British setting is not pervasive. The most serious flaw is sloppy layout, which causes some pictures to be cut off in the gutter or on the outside edge. In one case this includes parts of the text in an explanation of the Hebrew alphabet.Kathy Piehl, Mankato State Univ . , Minn. (c) Copyright 2010.
