School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1-Louis and his sister find themselves deep inside the stomach of a Saber-toothed Yumper when a leisurely bike ride through the woods turns into a monstrous chase into prehistoric lands. After Louis is swallowed by a Gulper, Sarah sets off to rescue him, but each creature that consumes him is set upon by a larger one, and the chase is on. Finally, she must crawl into the stomach of the Saber-toothed Yumper and, flashlight in hand, wind her way through the insides of all the other beasts to retrieve her brother. Although the situation resolves itself when the creature feels a real "frog in its throat," the siblings are not free to return home until one of them finds a more vocal way to scare away the still-hungry Guzzler, Grabular, Undersnatch, and Gulper. Fardell cleverly morphs verbs into the names of the monsters chasing Louis and a two-wheeled bicycle into a machine capable of floating, rock climbing, and flight. The antics are over-the-top, and the creatures are more funny than scary, making this picture book a natural for storytime fun.-Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada (c) Copyright 2012. Booklist Review

Cumulative eating tales have been a storytelling hallmark since There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly. The genre is delightfully revisited here, when the consumption of Louis by an orange creature known as a Gulper sets off a chain of events. Louis' sister, Sarah, is not one to panic, and she sets off in pursuit of the gulping Gulper, who unfortunately becomes the lunch of a Grabular. The Grabular is then swallowed by an Undersnatch. And so on. Sarah has the ingenuity of James Bond's Q, transforming her bicycle to cross land, sea, and air before finally catching up with the creature at the top of this food chain. Fardell's illustrations combine just the right amount of cute and dastardly, and children will squeal in delight rather than fear. The sequence where Sarah crawls through each creature's belly to reach Louis is a particular visual highlight. And the resolution shows that Louis is no victim of circumstance; he will take on any beastie once he is free of its digestive system.--Dean, Kara Copyright 2010 Booklist
