Library Journal Review

Sherlock Holmes is thought dead over Reichenbach Falls, but London crime marches on. Stricken but determined, the Baker Street Irregulars-those raggedy street urchins employed by Holmes for sundry assignments-step forward under the leadership of teenager Wiggins. The other Irregulars include pretty lockpicker Pockets, precocious inventor Chen, mini-chimney sweep Ash, and Tiny, the heavy and also an artist. Scotland Yard Detective Lestrade remains as dismissive of these pint-sized private eyes as he was of Holmes, but Watson throws in with the youngsters, as does young Eliza Mayhew and glamorous Irene Adler, newly divorced and at loose ends. In the first volume, the Irregulars solve the murder of Eliza's detective grandfather by the mysterious and slippery "M." (Moriarty, perhaps?) The other adventures constitute separate stories with a common element about the identity of M, brought to a satisfying conclusion in the fourth story. Holmes expert Leslie S. Klinger acted as consultant. VERDICT Lee is known for his Dr. Who comics, among numerous others, and his tight and lively plots will appeal to Holmesians and detective buffs, young teens through adults. Boultwood's simple, clear line art offers plenty of action with murky atmosphere. [These volumes are available online at various prices.-Ed.]-M.C. (c) Copyright 2012.
