Library Journal Review

In order to enjoy this work, the reader needs to wrestle with the elephant in the room (or in this case, the Corgi in the pub): this literary pilgrimage is devoted to drinking establishments patronized by a man who drank himself to death. Dylan Thomas (1914-53), the near patron saint of Wales, unfortunately had y cythraul o gwrw on his back-although it was, ironically, whiskey in New York City that ended his career far too early. Towns, who has devoted most of his life to researching and studying the poet, finds references to pubs (in Wales, England, and the United States) in Thomas's works, adds context, and includes a "where is it now" update for each one. VERDICT Thomas fans will love this book. The color illustrations of the pubs by Wyn Thomas greatly add to its appeal. But for nonfans (or one of those humourless folk who don't find people killing themselves with alcohol--talented or not-even -remotely charming), this text does not hold enough interest to be a strong Celtic travelog, literary biography, or even decent cautionary tale.-Lee Arnold, Historical Soc. of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia (c) Copyright 2014.
