CHOICE Review

This will be a satisfying book for teachers and students of science fiction. The nonlinear structure allows readers to select material that meets their needs, but the entire book is a worthy resource. Comprising11 chapters, the volume offers brief historical context that traces science fiction from modernity to the future; an annotated time line that integrates science fiction and major events from the 16th century to the present; chapters outlining major authors and key primary literary texts, critical concepts, and theoretical approaches; major science fiction films; and a discussion of science fiction studies in the 21st century. Particularly fruitful are chapters describing changes in the canon and issues of gender, sexuality, and ethnicity; these offer theoretically oriented assessments of the growing inclusion of nonwhite male authors, characters, and perspectives in science fiction. These chapters in particular showcase the exciting potential for science fiction to illustrate possible futures "that disavow the prescriptive nature of representation." Though scholarly in tone, this collection is clearly written and accessible to all audiences. --Stephanie Ellen Vie, University of Central Florida
