When I first moved to London, I quickly learned that London life operates on recommendations. The city is just too big; there's too much choice and too many tourists to stick to the obvious and simply visit chains or names that you recognise. I was soon asking, 'Where should I go for dinner with an old university friend?', 'Where should I take my mum for a treat when she visits this weekend?' or 'Where can I go to enjoy the sunshine after work?' The responses I got meant that I soon built up a little library of favourite places and reliable options. After living here for a while I found myself passing on my tips to other people and realised that rather than just keeping my favourites to my group of friends and colleagues we could widen our circle and put together as many recommendations as we could to create the ultimate list of London tips. So that's what this book is: recommendations, tips and pointers from a range of people on what they consider to be the best of London. It's the city's best-kept secrets and great features, all recommended by real people, and we hope that it will help us all to live London life to the full.
