School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1 A glorious new rendition of the familiar repetitive picture book tale in which an acorn falls on Chicken Licken's head. On her way to tell the queen that the sky is falling, she meets Henny Penny, Cocky Locky, Ducky Daddles and Turkey Lurkey, as well as Foxy Woxy. Unlike earlier tellings of this tale, the ``heroine'' is a survivor. She sees her friends being eaten by the fox and runs back home. Bishop's illustrations abound with soft, autumn-colored pen and watercolor illustrations which enhance the text with action and mood without confusion or clutter. Individuality (the travelers' unique hats) and foreboding (Foxy Woxy's sly, swashbuckling cavalier appearance in a graveyard) are deftly portrayed to create a suspense-filled tale. Whimsical touches include the tiny, busy mice appearing unobtrusively in several of the illustrations. The final page holds delightful tweeks of humor, making this an outstanding selection for picture book collections. Mary Lou Budd, Milford South Elementary Sch . , Ohio (c) Copyright 2010.
