CHOICE Review
A plethora of leadership books are published every year discussing how leaders should think and act. Gobillot, a leadership and organizational effectiveness consultant, offers a different perspective, addressing what followers want in their leaders. Leaders are not leading if they do not have followers following. The author introduces the book by discussing the wrong question often asked in leadership books: what do leaders do? Gobillot contends the question is really about what followers want. He breaks down the eight critical elements of charisma a leader needs to connect with followers and understand what they want in their leaders. The monograph is divided into four parts: "Emotional Logic," "Values Dimension," "The Character Dimension," and "The Achievement Dimension." Each chapter begins with a quick overview of the questions the chapter is designed to answer and why they really matter. All chapters conclude with a very brief summary of the essence of the chapters. The premise of the monograph is the importance of creating relationships with followers by connecting with their values, demonstrating character aligned with these values, and finally delivering on these values.
