CHOICE Review
Juniper, an experienced British environmentalist with sterling credentials, provides ample evidence of the economic contributions nature has made and continues to make from soil, fields and forests, and freshwater and saltwater, all initiating from photosynthesis. The book begins with a compelling foreword by the Prince of Wales. Chapter 1 is an incisive exploration of the experiment known as "Biosphere 2" ("Biosphere 1" is Earth's; see also Dreaming the Biosphere by Rebecca Reider, CH, May'10, 47-4979). This section provides a reference point for the balance of nature addressed numerous times in the text. Each chapter begins with three compelling statements with key statistics, e.g., "$1 trillion - annual sales dependent on animal pollination." The author bemoans the tendency to see the world of ecology and economy as separate when the total economy of the world depends on nature. He argues for a transition to a "bioeconomy"--a "fusion between human economic development and nature," citing a number of corporate innovations that move in that direction. Finally, Juniper sees the world's great religions as a source of inspiration to keep nature in good shape. Handsome color photos and a fine index support the text. Overall, an interesting, thought-provoking read. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. E. J. Kormondy chancellor-emeritus, University of Hawaii at HiloThere are no comments on this title.
