PreS-Gr 2-The first two titles in a series focused on animal habitats. In each of these interactive board books, readers are prompted to flip to find various animals hiding behind bright seashells and twisty coral in the ocean or gray stones and heads of crunchy green lettuce in the garden. Each spread features seven flaps and a few lines of cheerful rhyming text about the featured animal: starfish or butterfly, sea horse or grasshopper, crab or caterpillar. Flaps are sturdy enough for individual home use but will wear out relatively quickly in a public library setting. Additional searching prompts are woven into the illustrations, such as "Can you spot 5 worms?" and "Can you spot 11 stripy stones?" The mixed-media illustrations use soft washes of garden fresh or vibrantly marine colors. Simple circles with dots used for eyes create friendly communities of lush plants and curious animals. Readers will learn to be discerning about finding matches, as some differences are obvious and others quite subtle. The flaps and illustrations take center stage, but the text provides plenty of support by introducing descriptive vocabulary: "On wings so delicate and light,/the graceful BUTTERFLIES take flight." Although the bustling illustrations and sheer number of items to compare may overstimulate or frustrate some readers, observant little ones will revel in the search-and-find elements. In rhyming verse and colorful spreads, preschoolers are invited to find all sorts of creatures that live in the sea. Each two-page spread filled with playful illustrations of marine life offers seven flaps. Children are invited to look under the flaps and find both the matching pairs and the odd one out. Lift the shells, Concentration-style, to find the matching crabs or the coral branches to find the matching sea horses. The rhyming text accompanying each spread adds some information on the animals hiding under the flaps. To further exercise budding observational skills, each spread asks young children to find other creatures scattered throughout the pagefive starfish, three pufferfish, six eels. The companion volume, Pairs! In the Garden, follows the same format with rhyming text and colorful, mixed-media pages teaming with garden life. Lift the lettuce to find the matching caterpillars or the stones to find the matching snails. Here too, children are encouraged to spot other creatures scattered throughout the pages. Astute adults could use the game element to encourage verbal expressions related to color, size, directionleft or rightand shape. A book disguised as a gameor perhaps a game disguised as a bookthat will keep older toddlers and younger preschoolers thoroughly engaged.
