CHOICE Review

The international contributions in this edited volume focus primarily on the state of fatherhood in non-Western nations in the era of globalization. To understand and explain how fatherhood is conceptualized, defined, and practiced in these other regions, many of the contributors introduce new vocabularies and novel theories over the course of the 16 chapters across eight distinct parts of this volume. The many ethnographic accounts examine global fatherhood in the context of migration, work, reproduction, care, and the notion of family. In addition, the authors explore the effects of the global economy and larger structural forces on the changing nature of fatherhood. They pay particular attention to how the changing roles of (and opportunities for) women across the globe have contributed to changes in fatherhood. The result is a timely contribution that illustrates vividly how fatherhood is socially and culturally constructed, altered, contested, and, ultimately, enacted and practiced. Summing Up: Recommended. Faculty. --John R. Mitrano, Central Connecticut State University
