CHOICE Review

Cursory studies of psychology sometimes leave one wondering whether all good theorizing ended in the 1970s. This handbook not only proves that theorizing is still thriving in psychology, it also demonstrates the importance and the necessity of this work. More particularly, it illuminates the usefulness of post-Cartesian and postmodern approaches to the study of humans, approaches long neglected by mainstream psychology in spite of their popularity in sociology and anthropology. Contributors include an even mix of those who have laid the foundation of theoretical and philosophical psychology as a subdiscipline and those whose work, though less known, is equally important in demonstrating the diversity of theoretical approaches to the subject. Some of the essays are philosophically dense, as one would expect, and so will be somewhat inaccessible to undergraduates; and aside from the final two chapters, the book includes only a smattering of practical references for clinicians. But scholars in psychology will find in these pages things to inspire better thinking and improved inquiries into what it means to be human. Summing Up: Recommended. Advanced upper-division undergraduates through faculty and clinicians. --Joseph Ostenson, The University of Tennessee at Martin
