CHOICE Review

Colvin's well-written and important book is the most significant work on this subject since Stephen Leinen's Gay Cops (CH, Feb'94, 31-3505). The author analyzes the impact of gay and lesbian police officers in the US and the UK and examines policies that can help create a diverse work environment. Integrating quantitative and qualitative research, Colvin (John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY) tracks the evolution of police agencies toward being more gay-friendly both as employers and as service providers. He also provides insights into the barriers and opportunities that gay and lesbian officers experience working within organizations that traditionally have been hostile to them. In chapter five, he astutely notes the valuable role that female officers have played in paving the way for nontraditional officers. Whether lesbian or straight, women have helped to reform and professionalize police agencies. As agencies move toward community policing, gay and lesbian police officers can help them be truly representative of the communities they serve. This worthwhile book would be valuable for all levels of criminal justice students, as well as interested members of the general public. Summing Up: Essential. All levels/libraries. P. Horne emeritus, Mercer County Community College
