CHOICE Review

The amicable interrelationship between Spanish poet and dramatist Federico García Lorca and Spanish musician Manuel de Falla, and the impact of that relationship on the art of both, has long fascinated scholars. Orringer's objective is "to contribute to clarifying Lorca's multidimensional relationship to Falla in his works." In this superb, thorough, and engrossing investigation, Orringer (emer., Spanish, Univ. of Connecticut) broaches the body of archival documents on this topic that await thoughtful cogitation. The book opens with a musical glossary and a list of illustrations and musical examples and concludes with "Postlude with Coda." Readers anticipate a definitive resolution in this closing material, only to have the author observe that "the most salient conclusion that a book on the Falla-Lorca relationship can reach is its own inconclusiveness," a denouement that testifies to the breadth and complexity of the intersection of the two men's lives. Detailed notes accompany each of the 11 chapters. This meticulously researched endeavor transcends its temporal and topographic confines. A fascinating book. --Francesca Colecchia, Duquesne University
