CHOICE Review

Stouck (Simon Fraser Univ.) provides an outstanding portrait of a major Canadian writer. Stouck is particularly effective in describing how Ross's childhood and early development relate to and affected his work as a writer. Covering Ross's life from his birth and childhood in rural Saskatchewan to his time in Montreal, Europe, and California, Stouck offers a particularly strong exploration of the writer's depictions of lonely people searching for love and dignity. A few sections of critical responses to Ross's publications may seem overlong to some, but the biography as a whole should please anyone interested in literature and literary history. One can only rejoice that Stouck has given Ross (1908-66) the recognition his long-neglected writing deserves. This book should bring new readers to Ross's fine novels and stories. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through faculty; general readers. D. R.
