CHOICE Review

This monumental resource is indispensable for studies in Canadian visual culture, whether historical, critical, or political. As a foundation for research it collects often fugitive materials, Canadian and foreign, 1910-89--articles even in nonfilm journals, books, government reports, exhibition catalogs, newspapers, and theses. Handsomely produced, this work is clearly written and printed. Of its 24,800 entries, the compiler claims some 10,800 are descriptively abstracted. Lerner used 38 research assistants to pull together ephemeral materials about this endangered culture. The massive material is sensibly arranged. Volume 1 offers eight major divisions: general studies; genres; film and government; festivals and awards; industry; production, distribution and exhibition companies; film and video organizations; and related studies, which includes archives, cinemas, education, literature, censorship, film societies, and film and women. As regards Canada, subheadings move from the national to the regional/provincial. Volume 2, "People in Film and Video," has separate sections for film/video artists, cinematographers, editors, producers, composers, scriptwriters, and actors. Auxiliary materials are in French and English, including Rose-Aimee Todd's "Appendix: Chronology of the Canadian Film Industry, 1893-1989." Separate indexes cover authors, film and video titles, and subjects. One might wish for a wider representation of newspapers and theses and a more recent cutoff date, but these are minor cavils about a huge project, expertly completed, and an invaluable service to Canadian cultural studies. Bring on the update. M. Yacowar; University of Calgary
