CHOICE Review

Any publication that helps to bring the Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912) to the attention of English-speaking readers is welcome, the more so when it is a book as intelligent and thought provoking as this one. Truglio (Pennsylvania State Univ.) takes a declared but non-dogmatic Freudian approach to Pascoli, avoiding the temptation to concentrate entirely on (psycho-)biographical interpretation and offering instead a series of subtly reflective readings of his work that weave text, biography, and critical theory into a consistently satisfying whole focused on the uncanny (Unheimlich) as the "thematic and formal paradigm" for Pascoli's writings. Truglio first sets Pascoli in the context of the fin de siecle and the Scapigliatura movement, relating him to contemporaries such as Iginio Ugo Tarchetti and Carolina Invernizio, before going on to read poems from his major collections Myricae and Poemi conviviali and his essays Il fanciullino and L'era nuova. Those constitutionally allergic to Freud are best advised to keep their distance, but one need not be a card-carrying Freudian to find much to admire and to ponder in Truglio's thoughtful analysis. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Graduate students, researchers, and faculty. S. Botterill University of California, Berkeley
