CHOICE Review

This collection of essays builds on and expands the critical discourse on Dada and surrealism. As Hopkins (Univ. of Glasgow, Scotland) states in the introduction, the Dada and surrealist movements are "separate-but-linked." The 27 essays are divided into three sections. The first is devoted to chronological developments by region (Switzerland, Germany, New York, Paris), politics, and the tension between surrealism's broad international presence and the Parisian followers of André Breton. The last of these provides an important bridge to essays on the movements' development in Japan, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America. Essays in the second section focus on venues (journals, exhibitions, collections) and inspiration (from adolescence, nature, and automatism to ethnographic objects, sensationalized crime, and sadism). Two essays examine gender politics (Tirza True Latimer looks at gender bending by Marcel Duchamp and Claude Cahun; Patricia Allmer presents a feminist revision). Essays in the final section demonstrate the continued importance of Dada and surrealism and their influence on postmodernism. Though accessible to a broad readership, the collection is intended for an academic audience and is particularly well positioned to serve advanced students. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates; graduate students. --Elizabeth K. Mix, Butler University
