PreS-- Kipper the dog is bewildered by the hole chewed in his cardboard toy box. His attempts to count his toys frustrate him because instead of the usual six, he comes up with seven or eight. Then Sock Thing disappears. During the night the mystery is solved when Kipper discovers two mice in the missing sock creature. Instead of nibbling his box for their nest, they join Kipper in his basket. Preschoolers will enjoy the gentle humor, especially as they figure out the solution to Kipper's problem before he does by deciphering the visual clues. Keeping track of the stuffed animals will provide painless counting practice. Ages 3-5. Kipper the dog returns with a problem. Something or someone has been nibbling a hole in his toy box. He dumps out his stuffed animals and counts them to make sure they're all safe. But instead of finding any missing, he finds too many. When he counts again, there's one less than there was before. Kipper can't figure out what's going on until he realizes a pair of mice have sneaked into the box, and they're responsible for the hole (and the extra noses he's been counting!). A clever story, this also works as a counting book, and little ones will delight in using their one-two-three skills to help Kipper solve his dilemma. Large, child-appealing pictures set against plenty of white space make this a good selection for story hours. ~--Ilene Cooper

Kipper, a charmingly fubsy dog, is concerned: something has nibbled a hole in his toybox; and when he dumps his toys out, he can count one too many: seven. Lined up for enumeration, the toys are six again; but after putting them back in the box, he finds eight noses. So it goes, with pleasing variations, until the floppy-eared pooch discovers what the alert young lapsitter will have been following all along in the engaging illustrations--a pair of mice, now nesting in Kipper's sock puppet. Like Walsh's Mouse Count (1991), an elegantly simple, satisfying story with a lot of opportunities for counting. (Picture book. 3-7)
