CHOICE Review
Janoff is a policy adviser for the government of Canada. His book is well written and easy to read, even though he covers large amounts of data in excellent detail. The author provides superlative coverage of previous research and theories (very little done in Canada), in which he discusses the many difficulties of defining and measuring anti-gay violence, and finding out where and when it happened. Canadian media, police, and legal systems often ignore or minimize the brutality against LGBT persons. Indeed, macho police themselves sometimes engage in queer bashing. Perpetrators and defense lawyers often blame the victims. Janoff did his own hard-to-do research and gives horrifying accounts of cruel torture and murder of people whose "crime" is often only that they are LGBT. He gives suggestions on ways to reduce homophobia in Canada and elsewhere. An excellent resource for courses in criminology, political science, current events, and gender studies. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended. All levels/libraries. R. W.
