Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Pastoralism has shaped livelihoods and landscapes on the African continent for millennia. Mobile livestock husbandry has generally been portrayed as an economic strategy that successfully met the challenges of low biomass productivity and environmental variability in arid and semi-arid environments. This volume focuses on the emergence, diversity, and inherent dynamics of pastoralism in Africa based on research during a twelve-year period on the southwest and northeast regions. Unraveling the complex prehistory, history, and contemporary political ecology of African pastoralism, results in insight into the ingenuity and flexibility of historical and contemporary herders.

CHOICE Review

The 16 chapters in this volume are the summary of 12 years of fieldwork, beginning in 1995, of the Arid Climate, Adaptation, and Cultural Innovation in Africa project based at the Collaborative Research Center, University of Cologne, Germany. Researchers' primary focus was upon Holocene human subsistence adaptation to aridity in Africa, which meant pastoralism was central. The focus was on how change and diversity within pastoral adaptations, and between pastoralism and other livelihood strategies, developed, and what caused these changes, both in prehistory and in modern sociopolitical situations. The first five chapters focus on the archaeological evidence for multiple trajectories for emergence of pastoralism in all of Africa. The next 11 chapters deal with the ethnographic studies, most of which are in Namibia, focusing on ranching, specialization, diversification, migration, and economic and political interactions. While the volume will be of interest primarily to African specialists, students of pastoralism also will find it instructive. End-of-chapter reference listings, a compact index, and 100 tables, maps, and photos support the papers. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. D. L. Browman Washington University
