Library Journal Review
The key to an entertaining autobiography is a combination of good stories to tell and a distinctive life; Armstrong has them both. Born in England near the legendary Pinewood Studios, where he would later be an important fixture, Armstrong hit his stride professionally in the mid-1970s and has continued through today, working on, e.g., Thor and the upcoming Spider-Man reboot. Following the recent autobiography by prolific stuntman and 1960s-70s filmmaker Hal Needham (Stuntman!), Armstrong's story is almost the British parallel, though Armstrong is certainly more accomplished in the stunt world. The book is filled with anecdotes of his work on numerous Bond films, the Indiana Jones series, and countless other movies. Verdict For film buffs, there's nothing better than the kind of behind-the-scenes details Armstrong provides. The only drawback could be the writing, which is often too loose and conversational, occasionally pulling the reader out of the narrative. Overall, this is an enjoyable read for fans of film, especially action/adventure.-Peter Thornell, Hingham P.L., MA (c) Copyright 2011. If you're a fan of action movies, you have seen Vic Armstrong many times. His first job was as a stunt double on Arabesque (1966); his first big break came on the Bond film You Only Live Twice (1967); and he was stunt coordinator on such movies as Raiders of the Lost Ark (and its sequels). This is a slightly unusual Hollywood autobiography in that it is almost entirely devoted to the author's professional life no sex, no drugs, no dissing other stars. This lack of scandal may bother some, but readers who enjoy their behind-the-scenes Hollywood memoirs to be about the actual making of movies will be delighted. Armstrong hasn't seen it all, but he's seen enough of it to be able to paint a picture of Hollywood film production from the late sixties to the present, and when he writes about movie stars (from Connery to Ford to Cruise), he writes about them with respect. A lively insider's look at many of your favorite movies, not to mention a fascinating glimpse into the life of a working stuntman.--Pitt, Davi.
