Library Journal Review
Written by one of England's foremost architectural writers, who was made an honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects in 2000, this book illustrates cutting-edge architectural design in Britain over the past five years. The format follows Powell's earlier New London Architecture. More than 100 projects and buildings are described and brilliantly illustrated (350 color illus., 100 plans) in two or three pages apiece. A few of the world's foremost firms are represented, but most are of course British. A brief introduction establishes the context for six categories of building types, from restaurants to museums to private homes. What rises from the scintillating color photographs and their pithy commentaries is a lively assortment of colors, surfaces, materials, textures, structures, technologies, and compositions-all centered on what is known as "high-tech" design, for which the British are famous. Recommended for contemporary architecture collections.-Peter Kaufman, Boston Architectural Ctr. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
