Gr 3-6-With a magazinelike layout, this series presents small chunks of information in eye-popping spreads that will entice reluctant readers. The glossaries cover technical lingo as well as vocabulary words. The texts are a combination of first-person accounts, historical background, facts about specific equipment, and glimpses into the day-to-day requirements of the jobs. However, the information is limited, and those wanting deeper coverage will have to look elsewhere. Sutherland makes up for the lack of depth by including information about forces from several nations in his examinations of these exciting careers, especially in Undercover. The discussion of James Bond may be confusing to some readers, though, as Bond is talked about as if he were a real person. (c) Copyright 2012. Horn Book Review

Superficial texts with almost no transition between subjects introduce military crews and espionage operations. Scattershot in organization, the volumes are driven by sensational color graphics on busy pages, which may distract readers from absorbing information.
