Conceptually modeled after Scholastic's You Wouldn't Want To . . . series (and even illustrated by those books' regular artist, Antram), the Top 10 Worst series baits the reluctant-historian hook with plenty of terrible (read: awesome) tidbits and splashy cartoon images. Vicious Villains' loose definition of villain ( someone who carries out wicked acts or crimes ) could lead to some contentious debates, but isn't that just the point? Still, the list is certainly eclectic, ranging from Al Capone and Billy the Kid to the Borgias and the Thuggees. Kids with longer attention spans and researchers looking for report material will find their tastes merely slaked by the historical substance, but browsers will have a blast with these irreverent, quotable compendiums of calamity.--Chipman, Ian Copyright 2010 Booklist
