CHOICE Review
The intention of this collaborative resource by Slack (Univ. of Alberta, CA), Byers (Coventry Univ., UK), and Parent (Univ. of Ottawa, CA) is to "highlight what we believe to be the key concepts which are related to the management of sport." Using the framework of organizational theory, each selected term first presents a description of the concept and critical points to understand, and then integrates the concept into sport management contexts. The focus is Western and European theory, with minor lapses, such as the section on strategic alliances not including discussion of the emerging topic of international alliances. Each entry (many are four to five pages long) includes cross-references and a bibliography of critical research resources. Geared towards undergraduates, material has been selected from professional literature related to sport and business management. The work avoids textbook definitions and includes professional recommendations for further exploration of the topic. Entries are structured so that the authors appear to be talking directly to readers and guiding them through research possibilities in the field. An index provides additional access to the cross-referenced material. As part of the "Key Concepts" series, this book more than satisfies the criterion of offering students "accessible and authoritative knowledge of the essential topics." Summing Up: Recommended.
