CHOICE Review

This compilation of toxicology terms contributed by more than 60 workers in fields related to toxicology is an alphabetical listing of all kinds of terms one might encounter in a toxicology study--chemicals, drugs, natural toxins, pesticides, etc. It also includes physiologic terminology such as cholinergic crisis and hyperglycemia as well as biological processes and enzymes such as S-methylation and acetyltransferase. The definitions given for these terms are sufficiently detailed to meet the needs of individuals working in areas related to toxicology who require basic descriptive information, but they are not sufficient for toxicologists wanting detailed information. For example, a chemist may, in his reading, come upon the term hypervitaminosis, or pneumoconiosis, in which case he needs a brief description but not a detailed study. With so many different fields of science now involved in toxicology, such situations are common; thus this resource should be quite valuable. The dictionary is being continuously revised until its next printing; readers are invited to send in information for future editions. Academic and public library collections. -A. M.
