CHOICE Review

Due to its historical sensitivity, sex in prison has probably been less fully studied than other aspects of life in incarcerated circumstances. But it goes without saying that the denial of conventional sexual relationships is one of the classic "pains" of imprisonment, and the impetus to fulfill sexual needs remains strong for most inmates. Furthermore, prison inmates are especially vulnerable to sexual assault and exploitation, both by fellow inmates and by correctional officers, with formidable constraints on reporting and getting a successful resolution in such cases. The two editors (criminal justice professors, as are the contributors) of this volume have brought together ten chapters on various dimensions of sex in prison, with three of the chapters authored (or coauthored) by themselves. The topics include the prison sex culture, consensual sex, sexual victimization and assault, conjugal visitation, special issues for GLBT inmates, and health issues intersecting with sexual behavior. Three concluding chapters address international and local perspectives, as well as some policy and future research implications of what is reported here. Altogether, this volume should prove informative and useful to students of prison life. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above. D. O. Friedrichs University of Scranton
