School Library Journal Review
Gr 7-10-These books cover the beliefs, history, daily life, worship, and celebrations of their respective religions. They also discuss the groups' positions on issues such as drugs, gender equality, the environment, and violence. (Surprisingly, Sikhism has little on the ongoing political and legal issues faced by its adherents.) The titles are colorfully illustrated, but the text is small and dense. Most of the publications listed for further reading are adult and probably not readily available in the U.S. Briticisms appear throughout the texts and Sikhism's content has a strong British orientation. It is the weaker of the two, with numerous omissions as well as awkward, confusing writing. Both books suffer from internal inconsistencies, incomplete glossaries, and clumsily phrased definitions. Madhu Bazaz Wangu's Buddhism (2002) and Nikky-Guninder K. Singh's Sikhism (1992, both Facts On File) are more thorough and comprehensive. Patricia D. Netzley's Buddhism (Lucent, 2002) and Jon Mayled's Sikhism (Raintree, 2003) are far more informative.-Ann W. Moore, Schenectady County Public Library, NY (c) Copyright 2010.
