Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Torn is the story of author Joy Werner's struggle with two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries over the course of 24 months. ACL tears are serious knee injuries that plague youth sport, particularly young female athletes, and this book describes the long journeys of healing that the injuries demand, including the emotional and mental challenges. The personal perspective is supported by general information about the ACL, ACL injuries, and treatment. Torn is not only a guide but a real-world tale of what a young athlete had to endure and overcome when confronted with ACL injuries. It will be helpful to the thousands of young people and their families who face this trauma each year.

Booklist Review

High-school soccer player and coauthor Joy Werner chronicles her ACL injuries and healing process. Joy reflects on the range of emotion involved in an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, such as the fear of an MRI, the guilt over letting a team down, and the frustration of a lengthy rehabilitation on the sidelines. Her perspective is invaluable, as females are at least four times more likely to tear a knee ligament than males, and this injury rate peaks in an athlete's teen years. Joy's take on her injuries and recovery offer a relatable voice on how ACL tears feel as they occur, how they are diagnosed, and what to expect during the healing process. The book is replete with exercises, explained in both text and photographs, designed to aid in rehabilitation and also to strengthen key muscles and prevent future ligament damage. Blending a relevant first-person account with sound physical therapy techniques and medical expertise, this provides a wealth of information for girls suffering a common sports injury.--Anderson, Erin Copyright 2016 Booklist
